Thammasat University Background<br>
Founded in 1934, Thammasat University is the second oldest university in Thailand and one of the leading institutions for higher education in Southeast Asia. The university’s current student population is just under 30,000 of which 22,000 are undergraduates.
The University was named “Thammasat and Politics” in order to indicate the emphasis being placed upon moral, science, and politics. Thammasat University actually began with a major commitment as an open university “to teach students to love and value democracy.”
In 1952, the name was changed to the present-day “Thammasat University,” and in 1960 entrance exams were introduced, thus ending Thammasat’s open university status.
In 1986, Dr. Puey Ungphakorn, the tenth Rector of the University, initiated on expansion program and the establishment of Rangsit campus. The new campus at Rangsit is home for many new branches of studies, namely Science and Technology, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Fine and Applied Arts. 1986 also witnessed the opening of the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology. In order to accommodate the ever-increasing demands for higher education, the University has opened three other campuses: Pattaya Campus (Pattaya Learning Resort), Lampang Campus (Thammasat Lanna College) and Udon Campus.
